How is it possible that I JUST heard about the oil spill today at lunch? While I can't say I always make time to watch the news, and reading the newspaper isn't my top priority either... I DO listen to the radio and I am on line ALL THE TIME..... But it wasn't until today at lunch with girlfriend, that I found out there was a huge oil spill!
As oil contaminated more beaches and birds throughout the Bay Area, Coast Guard officials today admitted they took too long to notify the public about the skyrocketing size of the ship-fuel spill but defended their response to the mess.
You are absolutely right in feeling like there has not been enough coverage of this. I heard about it last night on my way home, did a quick search to get the news, and got two hits off Google for "San Francisco oil spill" (and one of them was a hypothetical scenario!).
I'm sensing a coverup here -- just don't know who or why.
It's been top-of-the-page front page news on SFGate since it happened on Wednesday morning. It happened around 8 a.m., and by 9:30 when I woke up and looked at news, they were already reporting that fuel oil had been spilled. That doesn't seem like much of a coverup to me.
It's also been all over my friends' blogs and local communities on LJ.
Don't read People or watch TV. Just read headlines as I walk by, friends' blogs, and talk about things with coworkers/friends. But I have asked around and I'm not the only one wondering about the lack of coverage. Guess you're just better connected.
